Dieticians
Dieticians are responsible for planning the nutrition and food programs and overseeing and supervising the meal serving and preparation program. The main job of a dietician is to treat a health problem by promoting healthy eating habits and making the required chances in the diet. There are many dieticians who manage the food service systems in organizations like schools, colleges and hospitals.
Today, dieticians can specialize in a certain field and become a community dietician, clinical dietician, consultant or management dietician. Clinical dietician offer services to institutes like nursing care facilities, hospitals and other medical institutes. They assess the nutrition requirements of patients and develop a program that will fulfil their requirement. They may also co-ordinate with doctor and other healthcare professionals when preparing the nutrition program of the patient. Community dietician provides services to individuals and groups to protect them from health problems. They work in places like clinics, health organizations, welfare communities and all other places that require people who can prepare nutrition plans. Management dieticians work in large organizations or healthcare facilities like company cafeterias, schools, colleges and prison. They may also train other dieticians and workers and help them in preparing reports, budgets and enforce safety regulation at work. Consultant dieticians work either as consultants with healthcare and medical facilities or have their own clinics. They screen the medical condition of the patient and offer them advice them will help them lose weight and control their cholesterol. Some management dietician may also work for supermarkets, sports teams and other organizations that are in the nutrition related business.
To become a dietician you must have at least a bachelor’s degree in dietician, food services management, foods and nutrition or any other related area. Some states may require you to get a license before you start practising. The requirements that you need to fulfil will vary depending on the State that you want to practice. Therefore it is important that you determine the requirement of the State before you start practising.
You are required to complete supervised internship before you start practising. This can be done in two ways; one is by completing a program that is accredited by the Commission on Dietetic Registration. You can also complete this stipulation by completing 900 hours of supervised practise at any of the 245 accredited institutes.
