Initially when you take up a medical job, you are excited even if you have to work at odd hours. There are many students who take up night jobs at hospitals to pay for their fees while parents take up night jobs to spend more time with their kids. However, before you take up a medical job that requires you to work at odd hours, you must understand the implications of working at these hours. Recent studies have should that working in night shift can have a negative impact on the quality of life and your health.
Many people who work at odd hours usually lose track of time. They usually rely on their watch to find out the day of week as they lose rhythm of their life. Also, they feel alienated from the society as they are unable to attend social events. Most social events usually take place after office hours, which is the time when most medical personal have night shift. Medical personnel who have night shift usually are less involved in sporting and cultural activities which can affect their family bonding.
Therefore, it is important that people who work in night shift understand the social and professional implications of their job. Initially, working at odd hours may seem advantageous as they have less job pressure and also because they have to spend less on childcare cost. However, it is difficult to work at odd hours for long time as it will have an impact on your health and social life.
There are many hospitals and other health care providers that have recognized the impact that night shifts can have on medical personnel. They are taking steps to encourage people to have a social life outside their facility. These healthcare providers also encourage their employees to do volunteer work that will help them get back into the community and maintain contact with the world outside the facility. Some healthcare companies provide their personnel with gadgets that can help them complete some of their work from home.
Scientists have proved that people working in night shift are more prone to health problems like bone fracture, cancer, obesity, heart diseases and diabetes. It is also a known fact that working at odd hours can affect your social like. However, there are many people who still prefer working in night shift because they can take care of their baby during “social hours”. These people must remember that it is easy to do a night job when you are young but as you grow old things can become difficult.
